Dry martini, twist of jazz

UPPER MARKET

By Nicole Honchariw

Where: Cafe du Nord  (Market Street).
When: Great for a mellow weeknight or a lively weekend evening (for the weekends, be sure to buy show tickets in advance).
Extra swag points: For sticking with classic martinis, exploring and securing one of the smaller lounge rooms, not complaining if you don’t “get” jazz.
Cash factor: Light to moderate.

Speakeasy’s and live jazz are kind of hot right now, but we live in San Francisco, where you need not settle for a modern impersonation. Cafe du Nord on Market Street has more than earned its keep over the years, but it’s managed to avoid the mainstream radar. Peep the schedule to make sure your interests and their entertainment align, and take your date here for a night of intimate live music, stiff drinks, and a great reminder of the vast city we live in. The space is comprised of several different rooms, so don’t hesitate to stake out your perfect nook. Note: Cafe du Nord shares its billing with The Swedish American Music Hall, which generally books better-known acts. If you’re in the mood for a bigger scale performance, start with a drink at the Cafe and head upstairs to the Hall afterwards (just make sure to snag tickets in advance!).
