MILL VALLEY

By Nicole Honchariw

What: Live music and rock’n’roll history.
Where: Sweetwater Music Hall Mill Valley).
When: A great option for any night of the week (but be sure to buy tickets in advance on the weekends).
Be sure to: Brush up on your history of the venue and arrive early to share your knowledge over a pre-show drink.
Cash factor: Moderate.

For the date who expressed a love of live music, there’s no better venue than Sweetwater Music Hall, a Mill Valley staple and musician favorite. While shows can sometimes detract from quality “getting to know each other” time, Sweetwater provides an unparalleled intimacy. Start in the charming cafe, where you can impress your date with your knowledge of Sweetwater’s history over cappuccinos: the venue originally opened in 1972, a true testament to San Francisco’s rock’n’roll, folk era, and was reopened in 2012 by such music legends as Bob Weir (of the Grateful Dead, but you knew that, right?) Put your witty conversation on pause to move into the performance hall, a lush room of velvet seats, brass fixtures, and rich brocade walls. Steal a perch on one of the antique chaise lounges, or opt to stay standing; who knows, maybe your desire to keep chatting will prompt an early exit. If you two are still going strong after the show ends, no need to call it quits! Great bars like Balboa Cafe and Piazza D’Angelo are right down the road. One final perk: a portion of all ticket sales at Sweetwater go to the San Francisco Bay Area Musicians Fund, which supports struggling artists. Even if your date ends up a bust, your karma is intact and ready for the next one.
