SAN RAFAEL

By Nicole Honchariw

Place: The Panama Hotel and Restaurant
Where: San Rafael.
When: Their weekend dinner (with live latin jazz music on the terrace) is hard to beat.
Your date will love: Feeling like you’ve temporarily escaped to the tropics, the lighter menu options, the intimate ambiance.
Cash factor: Moderate.

Ok gentleman, first thing’s first: just because the word hotel is in the name doesn’t mean you should automatically regress to prom night mentality. While many Bay Area locals are hip to Sol Food in San Rafael, few have made a visit to The Panama Hotel , which serves up delicious South American food in a Bohemian, eclectically beautiful setting. Sit on the palm-lined back patio and enjoy dishes like Ahi ceviche, Cuban grilled pork chops, and local Dungeness crab while lights twinkle in the trees around you. Be sure to peek at the restaurant’s website when booking your table; several nights out of the week feature live music. Once the wind is swaying with Latin jazz, all that’ll be missing is your Cuban cigar, but your date’s pleasure and satisfaction will more than make up for it.
