Lather Up, and we’re talking Ruins

SUNSET/RICHMOND

By Nicole Honchariw

Where: Sutro Baths (Sunset/Richmond).
When: This one is worth saving for a genuinely warm afternoon.
Make sure: Your date knows to wear comfortable shoes, you bring a few cups for the wine you’ll be packing, you don’t drink too much wine to make it up the steep steps out.
Cash factor: Light, but will trend pricier if you head to Cliff House for cocktails and dinner.

While making the ever important initial banter with your new love interest, she tells you that she moved to San Francisco for one key reason: being near the Pacific. For the lady who lives for the ocean and isn’t afraid to break a slight sweat, hike down the steps at Sutro Baths (Sunset/Richmond) with a nice bottle of wine and some paper cups (tip: might want to make that nice bottle a twist-off). Regale her on the way down with the site’s history: it was a massive, glamorous indoor swimming pool that burned down in 1967, and in another interesting twist, the site is also rumored to be haunted. The steep climb out will prevent you from getting too saucy on the wine you brought, but if you want to keep things going, you can easily grab a bite and another drink at the legendary Cliff House.
