I Went To Cal…To Hike

BERKELEY

By Leslie Moniz

Where: Berkeley Fire Trails.
When: Before it’s dark out.
You’ll need to bring: Food or snacks as it’s about 7-8 miles.
Cash factor: None for the hike.

While the name of this trail doesn’t sound appealing, don’t be fooled, it’s definitely worth discovering. Pick up your date and head to Berkeley Fire Trails. (Picking them up is extremely important, as it is hard to locate the start of this hike, and you may get frustrated driving in circles and looking for one another. If you’re feeling like reminiscing on your college days, park near the fraternities. It’s free street parking and a great conversation starter, especially if you’re in the earlier stages of courting. Who doesn’t love talking about the days of hazing, frat parties and beer bongs?

If you’re both runners, opt to run. Just be warned, this is not a leisurely run. It is all uphill, and depending on where the path leads you, elevation does get quite steep. On your way up, the nature isn’t what you’d  expect to hover above a college town. There are botanical gardens, gorgeous trees, and little waterfalls that surround this trail. Not to mention the gorgeous views of the city once you have reached the top. Take a few photos and make your way back down. Don’t forget to tell your date that she crushed that run and how you admire her athleticism – it will go a long way.
