45 going on 21: The Gentleman’s Guide to Silky Skin

By Leslie Moniz

Everyone knows men only get better with age, and we don’t disagree.  Though we love the rugged look, we know that deep down you guys wonder how women maintain elasticity in their skin when Botox isn’t an option. When it comes to lathering lotions, creams and serums, we’ve compiled a list of products that we use (yes us), which you can incorporate into your daily cleansing and moisturizing regimen. According to renowned dermatologist Dr. Ellen Marmur, men don’t need products specific to their sex. We anticipate you’ll be making the ‘O’ face when seeing the prices of our recommendations, but the most important thing to remember when maintaining your youthful face game is: don’t be frugal! You’ll thank us when you’re 70 and looking fly.

Step 1: Cleanse
Get rid of the dirt and oil your face has collected after a long, hard day at work with Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser and a Clarisonic.  This may sound like an elaborate way to wash your face, but if you want radiant, smooth and glowing skin, go the extra mile. We will notice.

Step 2: Tone! Tone! Tone!
You’re probably wondering what we’re talking about when it comes to toning and we’re here to explain. Though washing your face does initially remove dirt on the surface (especially with the Clarisonic), taking the additional step in toning is something even us women tend to leave out. Not only does toning help remove residue left behind by your cleanser, it hydrates the skin, restores the pH balance, minimizes pores, and more.  Below are a couple of our favorites.

Murad Clarifying Toner

Step 3:  Eye Cream
An eye cream can do wonders for the man who is a night owl or spends 70+ hours at the office. You guys may not know this, but the skin around your eyes is different than the rest of your face. It’s thinner and lacks sweat glands, which makes the area dry and is the culprit behind the accumulation of wrinkles and dark circles. Here are some hydrating eye creams that will help minimize those crow’s feet and brighten up the rings around your eyes.

Step 4: Moisturize
Lastly, we’re going to focus on alternatives to your regular lotions and creams. The Swagoo Girls team believes that moisturizers aren’t the end-all be-all, and trying a variety can never hurt. Whether you have oily skin and are applying a serum, or are dry and lubricating the moisture depletion your face has incurred over the years, you’ll definitely notice a difference in the way your skin adapts to your new regimen.

At this point you’re probably thinking,  “Are these girls serious? Do I really need all these steps just to wash and moisturize my face? Doesn’t a daily wash with a little Clean and Clear or bar of Dove produce the same outcome?” The answer is, yes you do and no, it does not.  Whether you dip into your girlfriend’s supply or buy your own, you’ll wonder why you haven’t been doing this for years.
